“Join Collegewise as we host a special screening of the new IndieFlix documentary Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety, followed by a discussion about the impact of anxiety on today’s teens led by Kirsten Hanson-Press–mother, Collegewise counselor, and former director of the Parents Education League–along with a panel of educators and therapists.

Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety aims to start a global conversation. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the US, impacting 54% of females and 46% of males, with age seven being the median age of onset, according to the World Health Organization. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable, only one-third of those suffering receive treatment. Teens who experience anxiety often feel invisible and alone. Through candid interviews, Angst sheds light on this issue by utilizing the power of film to tell the stories of teens whose anxiety has taken a toll on their lives and relationships. The young adults featured in the film are sharing their experiences with anxiety publicly for the first time, and as they discuss the solutions they’ve found, they inspire hope in viewers who have had similar experiences. Angst also features mental health experts who discuss the causes of anxiety and highlight resources and tools available to those who suffer from it.

Whether you’re looking for tools to help your anxious teen or you just want to be prepared for the struggles that may lie ahead, you’ll leave this screening and the conversation that follows better equipped to take on the challenges unique to teenage anxiety and depression (and with resources to help you effectively navigate the choppy waters of high school and college admissions).
